WHEN: Marist Dragons holds two training sessions a week – currently on Monday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm, and on Saturday mornings from 8.30am to 10am. Please arrive on time.

Bring a water bottle, a towel, shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting wet. An old T-shirt and shorts or leggings are ideal. In sunny weather a hat and sunscreen are advisable. The club provides paddles.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT TRAINING
A dragon boat carries up to 20 paddlers - two to a seat, with a sweep at the back who steers the boat and ensures everyone is safe.
You’ll be able to paddle immediately, but your technique will improve as the coach gives you instructions and you copy others in the boat. We paddle across, up and down the Lane Cove River, using sequences designed to improve our starts and to build up strength and endurance over a variety of distances. In between there are breaks for you to catch your breath, drink some water and soak in the scenery.
Each session begins with 10-15 minutes of off-water exercise to warm up, then it’s into the boats. (Our two dragon boats are stored by the river, so getting into the water is a quick process.) A typical paddling session might include a warm-up easy paddle, HIIT-style “pyramids” of paddling that build up to short bursts of 100 per cent effort, dividing the boat into “pods” to focus on technique, working on “race starts”. You’ll return to the boathouse comfortably puffed for some cool-down stretches.
After the Saturday session, many members enjoy a coffee or breakfast together at a local café
